The South Shore Regional Centre for Education is a consortium partner in the Nova Scotia International Student Program (NSISP). Established in 1997, the NSISP is a joint venture of the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and the Regional Centres for Education across the province.
NSISP students come to our region to study. We welcome students in grades 6 to 12, from one month to one year (or more). We host students from three regions of the world, approximately 1/3 of our students come from each of: South America, Europe and Asia.
Our NSISP students live with a local (Homestay) family during their time here in Canada. The Homestay family is at the heart of the NSISP. Living with local South Shore families, our international students are immersed in English and Canadian culture. In turn, host families learn about the culture, customs, and traditions of their student’s home country. Host families are compensated for providing living accommodations and meals for the student. All other expenses are the responsibility of the student.
The NSISP has Homestay Coordinators who work closely with host families to assist with cultural transition of the students, to resolve any issues that may arise, to provide on-going support, and to provide engagement opportunities.
